2010 Federal Budget: Measures for the Real Estate Market

On March 4, the Minister of Finance of Canada, Jim Flaherty, tabled his federal budget for 2010. Below are the principal points announced in the budget affecting the real estate market:

  • Due to unprecedented demand under the ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program, the Government is allocating a further $80 million to support additional retrofits by Canadian homeowners. In total, the Government has provided $585 million to the program under the Economic Action Plan.

  • The Government will bring forward regulations to bring greater clarity to the calculation of mortgage pre-payment penalties.

  • Continuation of the tax credit for first-time home buyers.

  • Repeal of the tax credit for home renovation.

  • No modifications to the Home Buyers’ Plan (HBP).
